Roopkund Overview & Itinerary

IMG-20250310-WA0000.jpg

The Roopkund Trek, famously known as the Skeletal Lake, is a high-altitude glacial lake located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. This trek is considered one of the best and a must-do in the country, as it offers a diverse range of landscapes, including lush green meadows, forest trails, high-altitude grassy plains, snow-capped mountains, and a spectacular glacial lake, culminating at the high-altitude Himalayan Junargali Pass.

Nestled at the base of the majestic Trishul and Nanda Ghuti peaks, Roopkund is renowned for the mysterious human skeletons found scattered around the lake's periphery. Situated at an impressive altitude of 5,029 meters (16,499 feet) above sea level, the lake remains frozen for most of the year. It is only after the monsoon season that the snow melts, revealing hundreds of skeletons along the edges of the lake.

The trek to Roopkund traverses the beautiful high meadows of Bedni Bugyal, known as one of the most stunning bugyals in the Himalayan region. The journey begins in Lohajung, which also serves as the base for the Brahmatal Trek. The trail from Lohajung to Junargali Pass spans 26 kilometers and is considered of moderate difficulty, with some level stretches along the way.

This trek requires physical fitness and stamina and is not suitable for individuals with heart problems, high blood pressure, or asthma.

What is special about the Roopkund trek?

The Mystery

  • The Skeleton Lake: The trek's main attraction is a high-altitude glacial lake filled with hundreds of ancient human skeletons, which become visible when the ice melts.

  • Two Tragic Events: Scientific studies have revealed two distinct death events:

    • A large group of South Asian pilgrims was killed by a massive hailstorm around the 9th century.

    • A second, unexplained group of Eastern Mediterranean origin who died in the 19th century.

The Scenery

  • Famous Alpine Meadows (Bugyals): The trail crosses Ali and Bedni Bugyal, considered among Asia's most beautiful and vast high-altitude grasslands.

  • Majestic Mountain Views: Offers stunning, up-close vistas of iconic Himalayan peaks like Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.

  • Diverse Landscapes: The journey takes you through lush rhododendron and oak forests, rolling meadows, and finally, barren, snow-covered terrain.

The Challenge

  • High-Altitude Trek: Reaching an elevation of over 5,000 meters (16,499 ft), it's a serious physical undertaking with a high risk of altitude sickness.

  • A Test of Endurance: The steep climbs and difficult terrain make it a rewarding challenge that tests both physical and mental limits.

The Culture & Mythology

  • Sacred Pilgrimage Route: The trail is part of the route for the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, a holy Hindu pilgrimage that takes place only once every 12 years.

  • Rich Local Legends: Myths connect the skeletons to the wrath of the Goddess Nanda Devi, adding a deep cultural layer to the trek.

Why book with Mountains Path?

The state of Uttarakhand in India is renowned for its natural wonders, which is why it is often referred to as "Dev-bhoomi" or God's land. This unique appeal draws adventurers to one of its most enigmatic trails, the Roopkund trek, famously known as the "Mystery Lake." This trek takes you through enchanting rhododendron forests and across the magnificent, sprawling alpine meadows of Ali and Bedni Bugyal, offering spectacular views of the Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks. The haunting allure of the trail is defined by its final destination: a high-altitude glacial lake where ancient human skeletons are visible. Although the Rupkund Trek reaches a staggering altitude of nearly 16,500 feet, it is considered a moderate-to-difficult journey, making it a rewarding challenge for experienced trekkers.

Synopsis of the Roopkund Trek

IMG-20250310-WA0000.jpg

The Roopkund Trek is one of the most famous and enigmatic high-altitude treks in the Indian Himalayas. Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, it is renowned not just for its breathtaking alpine scenery but for its mysterious and macabre destination: Roopkund Lake, a glacial tarn popularly known as "Skeleton Lake."

The Core Mystery: Skeleton Lake

The primary allure of the trek is the shallow, high-altitude lake of Roopkund (approx. 16,470 feet / 5,020 meters). For most of the year, it remains frozen. When the snow melts, hundreds of ancient human skeletons and artefacts are visible at its bottom and along its edges.

  • The Discovery: The skeletons were first reported by a forest ranger in 1942.

  • The Theories: Initial theories ranged from a lost army to victims of an epidemic or a ritualistic suicide.

  • The Scientific Conclusion: Modern scientific analysis, including DNA testing, has provided a compelling explanation. The skeletons belong to two distinct groups of people who died in a single, catastrophic event around 850 AD. One group consisted of local porters, and the other comprised a larger group of pilgrims, likely from present-day Iran. The cause of death was determined to be a sudden, severe hailstorm with cricket-ball-sized hailstones, as indicated by the fatal skull fractures found on the remains.

The Trek Itself: A Journey Through Diverse Landscapes

Beyond the mystery, the trek is a classic Himalayan adventure that traverses some of the most stunning landscapes in the region. It is a journey from lush forests to vast, rolling alpine meadows and finally to a barren, rocky, and snow-covered high-altitude zone.

Trek at a Glance:

  • State: Uttarakhand, India

  • Region: Garhwal Himalayas

  • Duration: 7 days

  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult

  • Maximum Altitude: Approx. 16,470 ft (5,020 m) at Roopkund; 16,700 ft at Junargali Pass

  • Base Camp: Lohajung

Key Highlights of the Route:

  1. Lush Forests: The initial days of the trek take you through dense forests of oak, fir, and blooming rhododendrons (especially vibrant in spring).

  2. Ali & Bedni Bugyal (Alpine Meadows): The trek's most spectacular feature is the ascent to Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal. These are two of Asia's largest high-altitude meadows—vast, rolling green carpets offering 360-degree panoramic views of Himalayan giants like Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. Camping here is a highlight for most trekkers.

  3. Pathar Nachauni & Bhagwabasa: After the meadows, the landscape becomes more rugged. The trail leads to high-altitude camps like Pathar Nachauni and Bhagwabasa ("abode of the tiger"), which serve as the base for the final summit push. The air thins, and the terrain becomes rocky and barren.

  4. The Final Ascent: The climb from Bhagwabasa to Roopkund is the most challenging part—a steep, 3-hour ascent in thin air, often over snow and ice, requiring determination and proper acclimatisation.

  5. Roopkund Lake & Junargali Pass: Reaching the eerie lake is the climax. For an even greater reward, trekkers can make a steep, final climb to Junargali Pass, located just above the lake. From here, the views of Mt. Trishul feel close enough to touch, providing one of the most iconic mountain vistas in the Himalayas.

Difficulty and Fitness

The Roopkund trek is graded as moderate to difficult. It does not require technical mountaineering skills, but it demands excellent physical fitness and stamina due to:

  • Long trekking days (6-8 hours daily).

  • Steep ascents and descents.

  • The significant challenge of high altitude can cause Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Legacy

The Roopkund trek remains legendary in the trekking community, a perfect blend of adventure, stunning natural beauty, and a captivating historical mystery. While it is currently inaccessible, its story continues to inspire awe and curiosity about the secrets held within the high Himalayas.
